Who we are

Helen Scanlan - Owner Manager

Helen Scanlan founded Zuri Design in 2004 and continues to run the business. Helen started Zuri Design from a passion for Africa, fair-trade and handcrafted products. The founding principle is that the trade of high quality products, enjoyed and appreciated by customers in the UK, make a positive and long term impact on the lives of Kenyan craftsmen and woman, many of which are from disadvantaged communities like Kibera slum.

Kathleen Scanlan - Overseas Manager

Kathleen Scanlan has been helping on a voluntary basis since the business was started in 2004. Kathleen has helped in all aspects of the business including working on markets stalls, sourcing products, stock control in Africa and running exhibition stands. In August 2006 Kathleen took a break from her successful career in Quality Assurance to set up Zuri Kenya. Kathleen spent a year in Nairobi and worked closely with our producers. Kathleen developed the Zuri Network (please see producers page) which has helped many of our suppliers increase their business turnover.

In November 07 Kathleen returned to the UK to help run the business.

Julie Scanlan

Julie designed and set up our first website in 2004. She has also managed our busy Christmas market stalls. Like Kathleen she has helped in all aspects of the business including exhibitions, packing orders etc since we first started, making it quite a family affair!

Jeffs Quignon
Jeffs started helping Zuri Design in 2010. He helps in business development as well as managing stalls and other events. A baker by trade Jeffs is enjoying a complete change in career for now and Zuri Design are very grateful for all the help and progress he is helping the business make!
